The Shipyard watershed, in conjunction with the community of Malpeque operated a successful watershed group for several years. The main goal for the group at that time was tree planting in hedgerows and other sensitive areas. The fruits of those labours are now becoming apparent as the former seedlings and small trees have become established.
The Shipyard River starts near Rt. 20 south of the Cheese Factory road. The upper section flows partly through open field and partly through a stand of alders. As the river flows downstream, it enters a beautiful mixed woods and eventually drains into Carruthers Pond, and then into Malpeque Bay. In 2009, the northern half (downstream side) of the river was cleaned, and many trees were planted along the riparian zone. The plan for 2010 is to continue cleaning the southern half and to patch cut the alder stand and plant trees in the cuts. The huge majority of the trees in our watershed projects come from the J. Frank Gaudet Tree Nursery operated by the Dept. of Environment, Fisheries and Forestry. Not only does the nursery provide us with excellent trees in gallon pots, but they also provide a wide range of technical advice on a wide range of tree issues, from growing challenges, to species selection, to special requests such as tree grafting sources. The nursery’s contribution to the success of our tree planting program is very considerable.
