The watershed known on the map as Sea View is a group of several barrier ponds that drain through the pristine beaches of our North Shore. These ponds are known individually as Branders Pond (Sea View Shore), Adams Pond, and Morrisons Pond (Thunder Cove), of which the largest system is Branders.
The Sea View Watershed Association originally did stream work on the Branders and Cousins Pond systems, and planted hundreds of trees throughout the community. By reaching out to do work on other neighboring watersheds, including the Baltic, French River, and Campbells Pond, it became obvious to the volunteer board of Sea View, as it did to the Indian River group, that there was a need for a larger, more efficient group. Sea View and Indian River were the core groups that initiated the family of watersheds that is today known as KNWSA.
The Branders Pond watershed starts in open fields near the County Line Road, passes through a heavy alder covered area to a small pond that is used as a silt trap and then into Branders Pond. Even though there are many challenges such as large hanging culverts on the Coulson Road and again on the Sea View Estates Rd., there exists a healthy resident trout population in its mid range. As in many of our systems, several years of heavy siltation have degraded the waters. Much of the problem has come from road ways.
The restoration and protection of our barrier ponds will be a key component to the success of KNWSA in the years to come. The north shore beaches in the KNWSA area make up a great portion of the most beautiful beaches in all of NE North America. The combination of undisturbed, accessible beach and warm summer waters is a rare and precious combination. These beaches and their barrier ponds help define the beauty and importance of the KNWSA family of subwatersheds.
